It was still raining when we arrived. There are several ways to explore the island, by foot, bus or by cycling. If you need information of what activities are available, refer to the Rottnest Broacher. Our group decided that the best way to explore the island is by cycling. the rental of the mountain bikes are for A$20 per day. Alternatively, you can rent it for a few hours if you like. I however advice you to rent for a full day, because the island is very large and will probably keep you occupied for the whole day. Refer to the Rottnest island map to plan your exploration route.

Let me tell you a little history of Rottnest Island. The island was initially attached to the mainland. Local Aboriginal people know the Island as "Wadjemup", which has been suggested to have the meaning "place across the water". The island was named late in 1696 by Dutch explorers, who called it "Rotte-nest" meaning rat nest, mistaking the Quokkas for huge rats. The Island has a facinating history as an Aboriginal penal settlement, interment camp during both world wars, a place for salt gathering and processing and a world war 2 military installation. Now, this Island had been transformed into a place for recreation.
